This movie definitely shows it's age, but it's a great movie to watch. The car chase is no big deal by today's standards, but back then it was utterly thrilling. To watch it today, you can still feel how revolutionary this was back then. The way the chase is filmed, it really looks like a car chase, instead of a bunch of special effects, and phony car tricks. This looked like the real thing.
Best of all, though, is McQueen. It's hard to put your finger on any one thing, but he just "becomes" Frank Bullitt, San Francisco Police Detective. He is stoic, hard-bitten, hard-nosed, and utterly free of pretense. Unfortunately, we didn't get to see nearly enough of Steve McQueen. The scene near the end, when Robert Vaughn's character is trying to explain to Bullitt that "we all must compromise", McQueen turns to him and spits out "Bullsh__". The look on McQueen's face, and the look in his eyes is absolutely priceless. The look and the eyes would stop you in your tracks.
Very good 60's movie.
